In relation to the media area you have studied, discuss the ways audience consumption has changed over time.

In film, audience consumption has changed drastically overtime. With it now heavily being affected by how accessible that film is. I feel like audience consumption in the traditional sense like, paying to go the movies has decreased. The reason being so, people are finding more accessible resources like, streaming platforms, illegal downloads, or just buying it online if they are willing to spend the money.

One reason the audience consumption has changed so much overtime is due to the new alternatives that are presenting themselves. What makes these new alternatives seem more preferable is that it’s easier access, mobile, or free. Many of the free options that substitute for going to the movies and paying for regular cable would be streaming devices like firestick or Roku. When people purchase the devices, they often do what you call jailbreaking, where you can get apps like Titanium tv, Morpheus, Mobdro, Torrents, etc. These apps allow you to watch movies while they are still in theaters or live tv without having to pay for it. Usually on apps like Torrents and Morpheus the movies pirated, and illegally obtained and posted to theses sites. For example, the movie Deadpool, produced by marvel was released in theaters February 12, 2016 with a box office total of 783.1 million USD and was illegally downloaded millions of times and was one of the 10 most illegally downloaded movies of 2016, according TorrentFreak, a site that gives statistics and information about illegal streaming services like Torrents.

          Another way audience consumption is changing throughout time is, people are starting to turn to legal streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Disney plus, etc. You get some of the content that you’d receive from regular cable or movies after they no longer show in movie theaters, in return viewers must pay a fee every month. The fee varies of which subscription you purchase. Since these services often cost less that regular cable and its mobile and easy to access many people often wait for a specific show or movie to be released on these apps instead of just going directly to see them. Many times, these types of services provide their own original content, whether it’s a show or a movie, and the original can be often preferred more than the movies in theaters or shows on tv. Take a look at the Netflix original show Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, Madness; which was released March 6^th, 2020. Netflix just released the statistic report on April 21^st, 2020 showing that in the little amount it was released it already gained around 64 million viewers. According to Kasey Moore in the article Every Viewing Statistic Netflix Has Released So Far (April 2020) on the site What’s on Netflix.

Lastly, another choice that affects audience consumption is cable tv alternatives. Sling, Philo, Fubo tv, Hulu, YouTube tv, PlayStation tv, etc. are all examples of cable tv alternatives where you can pick and choose which channels you want to pay for and just pay your monthly fee. Why this seems like a better alternative to regular cable and movie theaters is because it not as expensive as regular cable, and get to choose which channels you want, instead of having to pay for a specific plan. When you pay for certain premium channels like HBO, Sho Max, Starz, etc. most movies that were just in theaters are eventually released on these channels. According to Forbes and the statistics that Sling tv released, from January 1, 2016 to December, 2016, there was a reported 27% growth in hours watched per day.

As you can see, how audience consumption changes over time is its been made more accessible. Since its been made more accessible, it slightly eliminates the need to use traditional forms of audience consumption like cable tv and movie theaters. I feel that later on in time, these platforms will further effect audience consumption as they grow and expand.

The theme of the overall extract is mainly about a man who is trying to stop a bomb. But, in order for that to happen he has to get information from a lady that he is interrogating that is currently in custody. The deal is that is she helps stop the bomb she will be pardoned of her crimes. But instead of just willingly giving up any evidence she knows she’s starts to toy with the man that is interrogating her, knowing that she is making him upset. The reason it is making him upset is because if he lays a hand on her he will be off the case. I think that the many elements and camera angles that were used was the emulate the stress from the lack of time he and his colleagues.

The dark lighting Mis en scene play a role. It was used through the interrogation room scene as well as the camera room scene this is supposed to help convey the anxious melodramatic feeling that they are trying to convey to the audience. Another factor in Mis en scene was, the setting of the scene, the interrogation room. I feel like the interrogation room does really well at correlating with the seriousness of the scene because that is where she was being questioned. You could also sense the seriousness in the props that that were used, like the door and the files he gave her. His angry or violent gesture towards those modern object shows that he isn’t really here to for a regular conversation.

The non-diegetic sound played throughout the whole scene of him interrogating her and the people in the watching them through the cameras. This helped keep the mysterious factor of it all because, instead of just using background music that was up-tempo, they stuck with a calm steady tempo that still keeps you on the edge as watched the people in room watch and wait to see what man was going to do. Or and the tension starts to build in the interrogating room. The sound mix is used when the people watching the camera in the other room realize that the man attacked the women. This was meant to show all the multiple sounds going on at once as a display of the chaos that is currently unfolding.

The over shoulder shot was used throughout this whole extract, when it showed the man and woman were talking. The constant over the shoulder shots each scene, was used to show that it was more confrontational than an actual conversation. The camera zoom, I think was the most essential part of getting across the theme. The reason for that is because, the camera mainly zoomed in on the clock, their faces, the folder with the files in it, and the camera. When they zoomed in on the clock, it was to show the lack of time that they have. Zooming in on their faces was an attempt to show their current emotion, zooming in on the camera was to just hint at fact that someone is watching him, and since the files had something to do with the evidence she knew about, it zoomed in on to show importance.

Lastly, the split screen was used around the time when the man in the interrogation had first attacked the woman. This was cleverly used alongside the sound mix to show how the people watching the camera that was in the interrogating room responded to what was going versus how the man was responded. The shot reverse shot was used a lot throughout their conservation. Like the over shoulder shot, based on the speed the camera was going at, it showed the obvious tension that was there while having this conversation.

Nike Commercial blog

The commercial was the very first project we were assigned. At first I thought that it was going to be really hard seeing as I had no previous background in anything we were doing. Whether it was video editing and camera work. The first thing I did was, change into my clothes that were for the Nike commercial. These clothes consisted of the Nike logo, in order show what we’re selling. The Nike product I was originally had was multicolored Nike slides. So, I had to wear Carla's yellow Nike active running top. The reason I had to change was because, I needed to be wearing a least one Nike product above my waist. This was because, majority of the shots I was in, my waist and up was in the camera. Our setting was at the school on the track.

We choose the track because Nike is a sport company. An in your commercial you want sport elements. The shots I was in was over the shoulder and the two-person shot of the football being thrown. After that, I ended up recording my voice saying the words "made the move" for the voice over. During the editing process, one of the main things we have to work on was, getting the commercial up to 25 or 30 seconds. In the beginning, it was kind of hard to do that due to the short duration of each clip. So, we had to work on extending each clip so it could fit into the required timestamp. So in an efforts to extended the video we ended up derailing off the original storyboard ideas. The biggest problem while editing was editing software that we were given to use. It was very slow and constantly kept kicking us off. But we eventually found a way around the slowness.

Movie blog

I felt like this film was the best projector we'd done so far. The reason I say that is because it was so different from any other projector we've done. The setting of where we shot at was not close nor convenient to get to. We had to spend more time and resources to pull of certain scenes. For example, for the tracking shot, it was originally me of a skateboard holding the camera and Nagual pushing the skateboard. But after we realized that it wasn't going to work, we just decided to use Steven's car. An we used a lot of props such as knifes, mask, makeup, broken glass, and food for fake blood. The next scene that I had to do was where I greet Carla inside the house. That part was fairly easy because all I had to say was “Hey” and “I know” in a surprising manner. The filming of parts were fairly easy.

As for the editing, it took longer than editing usually would take for us. This was due to school shutting down because of the COVID- 19. This is also none as the coronavirus, which is currently a global pandemic that world is through right now. For the film we did a lot of re-editing and re-filming. This was because, we had to the time changes right within each shot so that it could all be in sync. Since needed background music, I had decided to look for royalty free background music that could be used. The website that I found that has free background music was called Fesliyan Studios. This website was the best one because it had a variety of sounds relating the horror genre. Which was good because we were going for various sounds to help support the current feeling of each scene. Overall the filming and editing for this film was a good experience.

Music video blog

The song that we did for the music video was Walking on Sunshine. The song's genre is considered to be dance/electronic. This meant that are initial idea for the music video was for it to be upbeat and fun. So that's what we eventually ended up going with after considering other songs. In order to contribute to the upbeat feeling, we put everything in correspondence to that feeling. Like for example the clothes that we wore were very bright and an flowy. The first setting we choose was the park right near our school on a very sunny day. The next setting that we choose was the beach, where we where walking on the sand and dancing in the water. In the final scene, it was a shot of the sun, which was used to symbolize this video. What I mainly liked about this video that the convenience of the location.

What I mean by convenience is, the location settings were very easy to get to. This was mainly because of their close proximity to the school. What made it even better was the days we were shooting at the park, instead of having to get a ride, I could just take the activity bus. As for editing due to the fact I was fixing a blog, Carla was the one doing all the editing. What she mainly had to do was just fix little things the transition for starters. When all the clips were first put together, there were about five transition bumps. Transition bumps is where you can see where the clips cuts off. But since there was only a few it was easy to smooth out. The only thing that probably slowed us down was just the choreography. This was because it was hard to get in sync. But overall the whole filming process was very fun.

CCR blog

This blog is mainly about, the CCR about the short film I just shot called mutant. This was just the first few minutes of a horror film. CCR basically stands for Creative Critical Reflection. That is basically four questions we have to answer when were finished with projects like this. But, this CCR was different from the other ones I usually would've done. For this one, we had to set it up as if it was an interview. An we were the ones being interviewed by either someone else or ourselves. In my case I dressed up as another person and interviewed myself. I shot all of this in front of my closet doors. An I recorded it using my mom's phone because it had better quality.

At first I thought that I was going to have to continuously change back in forth between outfits for each scene. But instead, I planned out the whole conversation between me and myself. An I did all my scenes as the reporter one time and the same thing for myself. The only time I had to shoot extra stuff was when I realized I finished and only had 5 min. For props I used wigs, and pantsuit, stools, and talk show mugs that said "The Sellen Show". After I thought I wasn't going
to enjoy filming it but I actually did. The hard part was editing because, most video editors that took file wanted money or left a watermark. So instead of having to pay and seeing a watermark appear, I just screen recorded the video. After this I had to download and convert it about hundred times just so I could put it on the google slide. After that I embedded the slide into this blog. But overall it was very interesting experience.

Editing blog

This blog is mainly about the editing of the film. Today I saw the final product of the film since all the editing was done. I noticed a lot of editing changes were made. A lot of these changes help contribute to some of the aspects of the genre horror. For example, I like how subtle the background music is instead of it being loud and obvious. This is because it helps build anticipation in the film. Before editing, the background music was loud and you could hear it more than the audio. Another thing I noticed was the cleaning up of the transitions. Before when editing even when we tried to clean up the transitions it would still come out choppy. But this time she transitions were clean which helped make the storyline clearer.

Another thing I noticed that changed was the font used in the openings credits. Originally we had planned on using a font from online that resembles the look of slime when spelled out. That was because things like slime are elements that are commonly associated with the genre horror. But we ended up just using a plain white font. The reason for this was because of the sudden closing of school due to the coronavirus. Also known as COVID-19, is an infectious disease caused by a new virus. This meant that we didn’t have laptops or the proper editing software to fully complete the editing process the way we were doing it class. So we had to use outside editing software’s that were very limited like iMovie. But despite, the rest of the editing was good which in turn helped contribute to the production of the film. I think this the film still turned out really well.
