Editing the commercial

We had just started editing right after filming outside. We had asked Ms. Katz for a SD card reader. Then we took the SD card out of the camera and put it in the reader and then plugged it into the computer. There, we dragged our footage into our Media studies file. After that, we opened pinnacle studios and then exported the footage there. We had to do this process about two different times. This was just to make sure that all our footage was safely there. After that, we laid out the footage in the order following the story board. We also made sure that we got all our camera angles correct. Then we officially started editing it into the format we wanted.

When editing the commercial there are so many factors should think about. One of the main things we have to work on was, getting the commercial up to 25 or 30 seconds. In the beginning, it was kind of hard to do that due to the short duration of each clip. So, we had to work on extending each clip so it could fit into the required timestamp. But in doing so we sort of derailed off of the original story board ideas. We ended up adding Steven running on the bleachers as well. When originally, it was just supposed to be Carla running on the bleachers. The main problem was when we were trying to extend each clip. When we would extend a clip it would leave a black screen in the middle. But the main issue of editing the shots was the slowness of the computers.

I would say that the slowness of the computers took the biggest toll on the editing process. It’s just because, every time we’d clicked on something on the software, we would have to wait for it to load. And if we didn’t wait for it to load, it would just kick us off. So because if that, we couldn’t use to the computers today to edit. So, we had to make sure to secure our footage. We could’ve secured by saving it in the cloud or on a USB. We chose USB because that was the simplest option. We had also filmed extra shots today. This was to help reach the wanted time duration. But for the most part, editing the commercial was a good experience.

Filming blog

This blog will mainly be about what I did during the filming process. The first thing I did was, change into my clothes that were for the Nike commercial. These clothes consisted of the Nike logo, in order show what we’re selling. I had on multicolored Nike slides ( sandals) and a highlighter yellow nike active wear top. I had to make sure I atleast had a Nike product that was above my waist. The reason for that was, the scenes I did, it mainly focused on me above the waist. For example, the over the shoulder and the two-person shot of the football being thrown. For the over the shoulder shot, I stood on one side of the grass while the camera was by my group member’s shoulder. We had to take like only 2 takes because, the shot itself was not that hard to do. That is just a part of what I did during the filming process.

Another thing during the filming process was voiceover. I did this yesterday in the hall because, it was quiet enough for the camera to hear. I had to go up to the camera and put my mouth close to the lens in order for it the clearly capture what I was saying. I said two sets of words that pertained to the Nike brand and their current slogan. The first slogan I said was, “made to move”. The second set of words I said was Nike current slogan, “Nike, Just Do It”. When doing the voiceover it had it wait about 2 seconds to get her work ready. The reason for that was because, since Nike is a sports brand the voice has to sound empowering or motivational. The duration of filming those take took around a minute. It was a fairly simple task.

Lastly, the other that I was in that was taken was a two shot. This take was similar to over shoulder because it was the same action  just a different shot. The only difference was that it showed two people. In the take I was the catching the football instead throwing it. This was to show them catching the ball I threw in over shoulder, then throwing it back in the two-shot. We had to about 5 takes due to where I was and how the captured it. I ended moving to the side of the bleachers. In one the better takes of me catching the football, I ended up breaking the fourth wall because I didn’t know it started. That meant I had directly looked  at the camera before catching. Overall, the filming process went very smoothly, whether was the voiceover or tossing the football.

Storyboard

 Storyboard:

With a Nike commercial, movements are usually fast paced to catch the angles of:

Throwing a football
Running
In this commercial, the opening scene is a Wide Shot of the track and bleachers with the editing of a title NIKE displayed. Along with this, a soundtrack will be added within the editing process.

Next scene, a Tracking shot of me running up the bleachers as a close-up.

Next, a POV shot of a football being thrown to a person at the end of the track.

Over-the-shoulder shot is next of the person on the other end catching the football.

Next, a Two-shot of the football being thrown to each-other.

Next, a Pan shot will be taken of a water-bottle being thrown to someone sitting down, which will then switch to an extreme close-up of the waterbottle being held and showing the NIKE symbol/emblem.

This will be the end scene.(last picture)

Editing Lesson Blog

For this blog I will be taking about the editing lesson we went over in class today. For starters, we learned the basics of how to work the camera and where things are. For example, the sd card goes under the flip side of the camera; and to take it out, you push it. The silver button with a red line is the recording button. Make sure when doing any project, to do a few or a lot of takes. The name of the editing software that will be used is pinnacle studios. In class we learned the basics of editing and how to work the editing software. One of the first things we learned was, right click is to open the folder. We learned that “dump” is putting footage into the camera from the SD card; and that, you should always dump your footage before you give the camera back. Lastly, to find footage go to the DCIM(based on date and time).

Now, on to the more technical stuff; when your ready to edit, click on pinnacle studios and got to the edit screen, which is the middle option. Go to “file” and then “new movie”, and clear everything that’s already there. Exporting footage means to take your footage out of pinnacle. Importing footage means to put your footage in pinnacle. To import footage from desktop to Pinnacle Studios, click on desktop , + sign , and then press folder. Click on everything you want to import and then click start import. You will be importing the footage you took before editing. Anything you need to edit you just drag to an AV track. Each AV track is for different things.

For example, AV track one is for titles, AV track to is for film, and AV track three is for music.
There are many shortcuts on this easy to use software such as, if you want to split a clip you hit the razor blade button. To speed up a clip, just right click on your mouse. When you open effects editor you’re able to edit things such as colors and transitions. To detach audio from a piece of film just right click and press detach audio. To put a title click on the T button and type what you want to press. When done, save movie in files and put in folder. To turn in it, press export and make sure it says, “Mpega, SD best quality”. Rendering means to put everything together and making it smooth. When making a movie look smooth it means to make sure that the footage isn’t choppy.

Research

My group is doing a NIKE commercial. In these commercials, the audience usually sees people
taking part in physical activities (running, sports, etc).

  They wear costumes such as their tennis shoes, basketball shoes, shorts, tights, sports
bras, and loose-fitted shirts.
  Props include NIKE footballs, water bottles, jump ropes, basketballs, towels and so on.
 Their appearance is usually fit, and sweaty, with added glisten to their skin as their doing
their activities.
 The score through the commercials are fast-paced sounds that are meant to make the
audience feel motivated and empowered to work out and be active.
1. Conventions and Codes in NIKE commercials include the symbolic swoosh, added with a
"JUST DO IT" slogan. This slogan sparks the media to just go for it, accomplish goals
and reach new heights.
2. In the commercial the props are ALWAYS angled to show the NIKE symbol to let the
audience know it is a NIKE commercial- even without stating the name. The symbol has
become universal so they know.
3. The commercial can sometimes include ethos- showing famous athletes, actors and even
signers as a way to show that everyone, even the richest, sport NIKE wear.

My hobby changes almost everyday and I really like hair and clothes. More specifically I like taking care of hair and putting pieces of clothes I think would look nice together. That's just a little about me. For this blog, I will mainly be sharing with guys about my process in different projects in Aice media studies. Whether it’s the commercial project, music video, or movie; I’ll be making sure to keep you guys updated.

I will probably be blogging two or three times a week. It depends on what I do in contribution to my project. Which at the moment is a Nike commercial. Throughout this project, you will see that I have similar posts with three other individuals. The reason for that is, those are the people I will collaborating with to make the commercial. That’s all I can tell for now, til next time, Safia.
